Guide to Music Exams at Legato Music

It is crucial for our students and their families to have all the necessary details to navigate this important time. Understanding the structure, timings, and procedures of the upcoming exams will help ensure you’re fully prepared. Let’s break down the essentials.

Exam Boards Overview

Legato Music offers examinations through two esteemed boards, catering to a wide range of musical disciplines:

ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music): Focused on classical instruments such as piano and violin, as well as music theory. Currently, ABRSM exams are offered online, as face-to-face exams are not yet available in Sabah.

RSL (Rockschool Limited): Specializing in contemporary instruments like drums, ukulele, and guitars. RSL exams are designed for those passionate about modern music, providing both face-to-face and online options to accommodate different preferences.

Exam Periods

Our exams are scheduled for APRIL, AUGUST, and NOVEMBER, allowing students ample time to prepare. Marking these periods on your calendar is the first step toward successful exam preparation.

Exam Format

At Legato Music, we conduct TWO main types of exam format, Online Recording Exams and Face-to-Face Exams. Here’s are the key differences:

AspectOnline Recording ExamsFace-to-Face Exams
EnvironmentConducted in a location chosen by the student, often a home or a personal studio.Held at a designated exam center or venue, with an examiner present.
FlexibilityStudents can record their performance at a convenient time within the submission window.Scheduled at a specific time and date. Less flexibility in timing.
EquipmentRequires access to recording equipment and possibly editing software. No personal equipment needed; the venue provides the necessary instrument (except for personal instruments).
AtmospherePotentially less stressful, as students are in a familiar environment. Can be more formal and possibly more nerve-wracking due to the presence of an examiner and unfamiliar setting.
PreparationAllows for multiple takes, letting students submit their best performance. One chance to perform each piece live, requiring thorough preparation to handle the pressure.
FeedbackFeedback is based solely on the submitted recording, with no opportunity for immediate clarification or interaction.Immediate, direct feedback from the examiner with the possibility for brief interaction or clarification.
Technical IssuesResponsibility to ensure good quality recording lies with the student, which can affect the assessment.Technical issues are managed by the exam center, ensuring a standardized assessment environment.
Examination ProcessSome exams may allow editing or specific recording guidelines, which can influence the final submission.Performance is assessed in real-time, with no possibility for editing or retakes.
ExperienceCan vary widely depending on the student’s access to high-quality recording equipment and spaces.Standardized in terms of environment and equipment, offering a consistent experience for all candidates.
CostMay incur costs related to recording equipment or space.Often includes exam center fees, which might be higher to cover venue and examiner costs.

By understanding these key differences, it will help students and parents make informed decisions based on their preferences, resources, and preparedness levels.

Enrollment & Deadlines

RSL and ABRSM offer distinct examination formats to accommodate the diverse needs of our students at Legato Music. RSL grants the unique advantage of selecting between face-to-face or online recording exams, enabling students to opt for the setting that best aligns with their comfort and confidence levels. On the other hand, ABRSM, acknowledging the current constraints in Sabah as of 2024, conducts examinations exclusively through online recordings. This ensures every student has the opportunity to participate and exhibit their musical talents, unhindered by location.

For those choosing RSL’s face-to-face exams, it’s crucial to note that enrollment is required at least 6 months in advance, a necessary lead time for logistical planning and securing a slot. Conversely, online exams for both RSL and ABRSM necessitate enrollment one month prior to the exam period. To aid in this process, we proactively send reminders well ahead of time, ensuring our students are well-prepared and don’t miss these critical deadlines.
